Cancer Signalling & Metabolism

Our group aims to identify  molecular targets involved in the ethiopathogenesis of human cancer with potential applications in early diagnosis and specific therapy, using thyroid neoplasms as a model.   Besides this component of translation research, the group focus its basic research interests in the study of the carcinogenic role of alterations of signaling pathways, mitochondrial functions, apoptotic mechanisms and mechanisms/molecules involved in mobility and invasion. The validation and identification of new molecular targets for cancer treatment using chemical inhibitors of  intracellular signaling, or selectively abolishing gene expression by siRNA, is also a research  area addressed by our group. Some of these studies use, as models, neuroendocrine and hematologic tumours besides thyroid neoplasms.
