Short CV
Hugo graduated in Biology from the Faculty of Science and Technology of the University of Coimbra (FCTUC), where he also completed a Masters degree in Molecular and Cell Biology, and then obtained his doctoral degree in Biomedicine from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Porto, with work performed at the Ipatimup. Hugo has published several peer-reviewed scientific papers and has lectured courses in doctoral programs, as well as the oncobiology subject at FCTUC. In 2006 Hugo co-founded Infogene Lda., a company headquartered at the Pedro Nunes Institute, in Coimbra. Besides the experience in management accumulated since then, Hugo has developed skills in the field of industrial property, including through a course given by Portugal’s patent and trademark office (INPI), as well as through workshops on patent preparation, database consultation and writing of patent claims. Hugo also took a mini-MBA from the School of Economics of the University of Coimbra and has acted as a consultant in subjects such as sales and marketing, communication, and diagnostics and medical device registration. Hugo has been awarded several prizes, both in science and in innovation, including the “Young Investigator Award” of the European Society of Human Genetics, the National Prize for Endocrinology 2010, the BES Inovação award (Grand Winner, 2007), and the National Bio-entrepreneur Competition (1st place, 2006). In 2010 he was included in the three finalists of the Young Entrepreneur Award of the Portuguese Association of Young Businesspersons (ANJE).

Highlights
Hugo has been unraveling the role of an endocytic receptor called LRP1B in cancer. After having extensively characterized the changes underlying inactivation of this tumor suppressor gene, that encompass chromosomal, epigenetic and microRNA-mediated mechanisms, Hugo set-out to investigate the functions underlying the ability of this endocytic receptor to reduce growth, invasion and angiogenesis of tumor cells. He found that, through its endocytic activity, LRP1B modulates the abundance of a number of soluble factors in the extracellular microenvironment. These include growth factors, metalloproteinases and angiogenic factors. At the present time Hugo is exploring strategies to use LRP1B as a therapeutic tool.
